Asherati

This is the entry on the Asherati race. For the Asherati civilization, see The Warrens

Asherati appear as strange-colored and peculiarly thin humanoids initially. Their face is oval-shaped, and they are completely devoid of hair. Their skin is a dark sand color, almost to red. The eyes of an Asherati are hidden beneath a heavy brow and are unique, in that, with the aid of their own light, they can "see" through sand.

Asherati were created by Akhat in response to a plea of one of his human flock. The one who did the begging was transformed into an Asherati, and sent to beneath the sands with others like him. There, they learned to burrow out homes for themselves. The Asherati have begun to establish great cities in the sand, reinforced and stable, even with the traveling sands all around.

Asherati can naturally breath beneath sand, as well as in the storms that ravage the surface. Their bodies require far less water than a human would, and they can tolerate greater temperature extremes and for longer periods of time.

Asherati Racial Traits

  • Medium: As medium creatures, asherati have no bonus or penalties from size
  • Asherati base land speed is 30 feet.
  • +1 Natural armour; to protect them from the sand they travel through, asherati skin has roughened and thickened.
  • Sandswim (Ex)
  • Radiance (Su)
  • LA +0

Sandswim (Ex): The sands are a vast ocean for the Asherati to move through and swim in. They can move through the sands at their normal speed when unencumbered. With their unique physiology, they can see and breathe there -- or in any form of sand or dust or ash. They can travel through the sands while carrying things -- there are packs and bags designed to be streamlined against their bodies that are sold in the Asherati markets. Larger objects make for harder and more tiring going of it. If there is some distance to cover with something of size, it will usually be transported over the surface rather than beneath.

Radiance (Su: Asherati possess the ability to produce light from their own flesh. This light can pierce through, for instance, sand, allowing them to have light to see while swimming, or in nighttime above. They control to a degree how much light they wish to let off, allowing them to make their circle wider or smaller. The light is usually somewhere between orange and red in coloration. If they so desire, they can release this radiance in a sudden brilliant burst. A creature that succeeds on a DC 15 + 1/2 character level + higher of Con or Cha modifier reflex save is only dazzled, rather than blinded.
